Dublin to Bushmills

Above is the view of the sunset from my new home away from home in Bushmills.

This picture was taken just near our townhouse, a short walk into Bushmills, which is known for its whiskey distillery

and it's proximity to The Giant's Causeway.

We drove up here from Dublin on Tuesday in the pouring rain. Due to the weather conditions we decided to not bother with scenic routes but just to take the main highways for most of the journey. The landscape was green and slightly rolling, reminiscent of B.C.'s Fraser Valley's farmland minus the mountains.

As we got on to more secondary roads, we were struck by how all the houses seemed gray and very plain, very different than the shuttered white and red houses in the Basque country of Spain and France. The churches were gray and definitely Protestant.

We eventually reached the busy little town of Bushmills and had a very delicious very late lunch at The Bistro, in my case roast beef with yes, two kinds of potatoes and vegetables (just like mom used to make but only one type of potato in my house!). Our next stop was the post office where Patricia and I were able to get pounds (note that Great Britain doesn't use Euros). Despite the bank machine malfunctioning for Irene she liked her new best friend, the post mistress, Maureen, who is a great source of local knowledge.

We all immediately fell in love with our "home" just a short distance from town. First, it is modern with all the conveniences but cozy with lots of space. Etta, the owner left us milk, eggs, cookies, our new favorite wheaten bread, and cheese so that we didn't even have to go out in the rain again to the grocery store.

Our evening was spent trying out the washing/drying machine (we hadn't seen one of those before),checking out Etta's extensive book and DVD collection, and watching English language TV. It stopped raining and we had a beautiful sunset.

Stay tuned for Tuesday's trip to the Giant's Causeway.

Location:Bushmills, Northern Ireland
