Note the curving road...
California's population may equal Canada's but we sure saw some empty unspoiled stretches along here. We love our own Sea to Sky Highway from Vancouver to Whistler but the length of this beautiful drive is astounding. The fog seems never far away so that later on we missed seeing Moro Bay almost completely! All that twisting and turning can make driving a bit tiring though. It was nice we had two drivers.
Our lunch and gas stop was a charming town called Cambria, originally settled by Welsh minors and in the 70's attracted artists and now tourists. There is the newer section, West Village and the older section, East Village. We chose the older section.
This is Robin's where we had a delicious lunch.
Below are the lovely gardens behind Heart's Ease, an herb and garden store.
We probably could have lingered longer but we had quite a few miles before Santa Barbara.
So no stopping as we drove by Moro Bay (couldn't really see due to fog) and at San Luis Obispo (the setting for Eurlene Fowler's quilting mystery novels) we decided to abandon Highway One for 101.
At 5:45, fifteen minutes ahead of schedule (Sue keeps us organized) we had reached our destination.
We were very pleased with our new abode for a week but we did need laundry detergent and a few groceries so we checked out our new neighbourhood.
Just around the corner, Santa Barbara County Courthouse.
We had dinner and planned for future adventures.
